RETAINING A LAWYER
Do I know if I have the right lawyer?
At a minimum, you should have a lawyer that does a lot of ovi work. I once served on a committee with James Kura, one of the best criminal lawyers ever to practice in Columbus. Jim, however, did not do much traffic work and he was amazed at the level of complexity in drunk driving cases. Lawyers who think drunk driving cases are simple and that anyone can do them haven’t kept up.

Why is it important to have a lawyer that focuses on OVI cases? Handling lots of drunk driving cases doesn’t ensure that the lawyer is good; however, a lawyer who handles few of these cases probably has not put the time in to learn the law in this area thoroughly, or to keep up with recent developments. As a result he or she may not recognize available defenses and ways to obtain less severe penalties. Any fool can plead clients guilty. What most clients want is a lawyer with enough experience to intelligently evaluate a case and recognize opportunities that will benefit the client.
